Shannon Coates is (putting it mildly) a pedagogy enthusiast.
In February 2020 (yep! THAT February), after nearly two decades of running a thriving independent voice studio in dual suburban and urban settings, Shannon shifted her focus to supporting voice educators as they grow their teaching skills. Through her Live Office Hours (find them on YouTube), POPUP VoicePed Classes, resources like The VoicePed 101 Library, and training programmes such as The VoicePed UnDegree, she's become known for her practical, engaging approach and passion for creating inclusive voice spaces. Her contributions to the wider voice teaching community include a (not insignificant, if she does say so herself) presence on all things Meta (say 'hi' on Insta or the Book o' Face, if you're in the neighbourhood), along with about a million and one podcast episodes ("The Changing Face of Vocal Pedagogy" with Nikki Loney on the Full Voice Podcast is one of her favs), several conference presentations and keynotes (most recently, Pedagogy Is Political – How Shifting Sociocultural Paradigms Redefines Our Teaching" at the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing national conference) and a journal publication or two (check out Neurodiversity in the Voice Studio, Clinic, and Performance Space: Using a Neurodiversity Affirming Lens to Build More Inclusive Spaces for Singers in the Journal of Singing).
Shannon holds three Vocal Performance Degrees from the University of Toronto, culminating in a Doctorate of Musical Arts specializing in Voice Pedagogy (hence the whole "Dr C" thing) and when she sings western-classical styles? She's a mezzo soprano.
She also uses way too many parentheses.
